Frederick J Brown

Frederick J Brown (1945-2012) is best known for his figurative paintings, many depicting the vibrant music scene of Chicago’s South Side. In 2021, though, a landmark exhibition curated by Lowery Stokes Sims at Berry Campbell gallery, New York, brought overdue attention to Brown’s abstract paintings from the 1970s. These reveal a unique approach to colour field painting, which draws inspiration from Brown’s African-American and Native American heritages and abstract expressionism. The centrepiece of Berry Campbell’s booth at Frieze will be Brown’s 1970 Galaxy painting, influenced by his studies with Buckminster Fuller.
