The run of women abstract painters all attracted good crowds, but nothing prepared me for Berry Campbell, where a show of Elaine de Kooning’s work, spanning the last four decades of her career, had drawn a mob scene. Working with the artist’s family, many of whom were in attendance, Berry Campbell was able to mount the first show of de Kooning’s work since the National Portrait Gallery’s exhibition around her portrait of President John F. Kennedy, a decade ago. Fittingly, the show is filled with portraits; you’ll see J.F.K., Alex Katz, Tom Hess, and other less notable folks. It also includes some of de Kooning’s standout abstract and figurative work.
