In the history of Abstract Expressionism, the familiar story often revolves around a small group of celebrated names. Yet the movement that transformed American painting after the Second World War was shaped by a wider community of artists, including women whose achievements were frequently pushed to the margins. Perle Fine was among those who helped define its visual language, developing a rigorous approach to abstraction that remained central to her practice throughout her career.
At Berry Campbell in Chelsea, Perle Fine: Ninth Street Woman brings this contribution into focus. On view from September 10 through October 24, 2026, the exhibition presents fifteen paintings and works on paper spanning the 1940s to the early 1960s. It offers an opportunity to reconsider Fine not as a supporting figure in the history of Abstract Expressionism, but as an artist with an independent and sustained vision.
