‘Women of the 8th Street Club’ features women artists who shaped the intellectual and artistic life of The Club, a pivotal forum for abstract expressionism in post-war New York. Though membership was by invitation and women were significantly underrepresented, Elaine de Kooning, Perle Fineand Mercedes Matter were the only three women admitted as voting members. Bringing together works by these artists alongside Mary Abbott, Alice Baber, Helen Frankenthaler, Grace Hartigan, Joan Mitchell, Ethel Schwabacher and Yvonne Thomas, Berry Campbell’s presentation spotlights the women who contributed to the movement’s development while challenging their historical marginalisation within its narrative.
