Independent 20th Century Announces Details of 2026 Fair at the Breuer Building
Art Forum
Independent 20th Century, a fair dedicated to shaking up the public’s established understanding of 20th century art, has just announced the specifics of its fifth edition, which will take place in the Breuer building—the home of Sotheby’s global headquarters in New York—and run from September 24–27 of this year.
The fair, Independent said, will host fifty-six exhibitors and welcome contributions from more than 130 artists, making this their biggest iteration yet; the expanded event will thematically focus on the fair’s overall mission of diversifying the 20th century canon by bringing artists of diverse backgrounds and disciplines together. Additionally, now that the fair has nearly doubled in size from previous editions, Independent 20th Century will be able to host a program of live performances and other events.
Among the participants, this year’s fair will host Luxembourg + Co. gallery, which will present Wassily Kandinsky, Paul Klee, and Sue Fuller; Mariane Ibrahim gallery, which will showcase Lorraine O’Grady and Jose Gamarra; and New York’s Berry Campbell gallery, which will present a show called “The Women of Stable Gallery” that includes Ethel Schwabacher, Alice Baber, Janice Biala, Elaine de Kooning, Dorothy Dehner, Perle Fine, Joan Mitchell, and Yvonne Thomas.
