DANCE PERFORMANCE
Martha Graham Dance Company

Berry Campbell is pleased to present two solo performances by the Martha Graham Dance Company presented on the occasion of Judith Godwin: Flux and Form. The company will perform two of Graham’s solo works, Lamentation and Ekstasis, as a living counterpart to Godwin’s sweeping gestures, activating the artists’ shared language of motion, weight, and release. During Godwin’s time  as a student at Mary Baldwin College in 1950, she invited the pioneering choreographer and dancer, Martha Graham, to campus to perform. Their meeting  led to a lifelong friendship that influenced the entirety of the artist’s oeuvre where she translates the  expressive force and movement of modern dance into paint, employing rhythm,  tension, and embodied motion throughout her compositions.

FILM SCREENING
Judith Loves Martha (2018)
Directed by Anna Gaskell

In Anna Gaskell’s 2018 short film,
Judith Loves Martha, 87-year-old Judith Godwin shares the emotional story of her immediate connection and friendship with choreographer Martha Graham. Godwin’s encounter with the mother of modern dance gave her the courage to create movement within her abstract paintings.
