Frank Bowling Biography

b. 1936

FRANK BOWLING (b. 1936)

Frank Bowling was born in British Guyana in 1936, yet belongs to the generation of British artists that became prominent in the sixties. Bowling graduated from the Royal College of Art in 1962 along with David Hockney and R.B. Kitaj and soon moved to New York where he lived for over a decade and found his artistic identity in the traditions of the Abstract Expressionists like Mark Rothko.  Vigorously dripping and pouring paint in lustrous accretions, he creates texturally complex paintings in which he plays with structure through collaged and brightly painted shapes.

In 1971 the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, held a one-person exhibition of Bowling’s work.  That same year, the noted critic Clement Greenberg became a mentor to Bowling and encouraged his exploration of modernism.

In 2005, he became the first black artist admitted into the Royal Academy, London and received the Order of the British Empire in 2008.  In recent years he has had solo museum exhibitions at the Tate Britain (2012), Spritmuseum, Stockholm, Sweden (2014-2015), and the Dallas Museum of Art (2015).

Bowling’s work is represented in major public collections around the world including the Guyana National Collection, Castellani House, Georgetown, Guyana;  the John Simon Guggenheim Foundation, New York; the Menil Foundation, Houston, Texas; the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; the Museum of Modern Art, New York; Royal Academy of Arts, London; Royal College of Art, London; the Tate Britain, London; the Tate Modern, London; Victoria and Albert Museum, London; and the Whitney Museum, New York.

Bowling currently splits his time between London and New York.
